Winter seems so far away – but it’s not!

Posted

What a terrific summer we just had. The weather was sunny and the temperature was moderate. A truly picture perfect way to spend the summer. The winter months seem so distant, so it’s easy to forget how bad it was last winter. Remember having to shovel thick, wet snow with temperatures constantly in the teens to low 20s and an overall feeling that the winter would never end?

Many people had leaks with their roofing, siding and gutters but the weather would not allow access to those areas for repairs. Many of these issues could have been corrected if a general inspection would have been performed prior to the weather changing.

Here is a checklist to consider in making your home weatherproof for the coming winter months:

  • Inspect your roof for missing or damaged shingles.
  • Replace damaged flashings on plumbing ventilation pipes, heater vent, dryer vents and attic vents.
  • Seal flashings to masonry chimneys and side walls.
  • Caulk windows and entry doors.
  • Clean out gutters and downspouts of leaves and debris and secure them to the home.
  • Check insulation and penetrations in the attic to see if there is adequate insulation.

Last winter put a strain on your home and most weather experts are speculating that this coming winter will be even worse.

As summer is coming to an end and winter is cycling up, we could be in for another rough season. Don’t wait until the last minute to have these things addressed.
